da capo al fine

svbtle is great because it’s clean and non-mainstream. it is also where i’ve written many long pieces like two stories, which was never finished. i’ve always endeavoured to write more, usually narrative pieces, because i think narratives/recounts are underrated and i disagree with the establishment’s view that expository writing is the way to go.

i don’t think i will be posting much here anymore.

if i do post, it will be at my tumblelog.

today, xuan took the train to my place and we dropped off my grandmother at camden medical centre for her eye specialist appointment. then we went to habitat coffee for breakfast. they have free wi-fi there. the parking lots outside the place were all fully parked, so we parked a little farther away from the shop and walked there. after that, we tried to search for the nunsongyee outlet at thomson, and we found it only a few metres away from habitat.

then, we went to Pacamara Boutique Coffee Roasters, where we each got an iced coffee (she likes black, i like white) and then drove to lasalle, where we looked around at the exhibits (about three of them in total, each took about twenty minutes or so). venus, xuan’s friend, came and walked around one of the exhibitions with us before leaving to do her own things. then, we drove to singapore pools at everton park to purchase some...

beijing 2016

i met xuan at the airport and we went to check-in. i’d already done the online check-in 48 hours prior, so all we had to do was print out our boarding passes and drop off our luggage. they had these self-service kiosks where you had to print your own boarding pass before doing the bag drop. it was effortless and painless, but the paper was a bit flimsy. we dropped off our bags, went to collect the router and then went into the transit area. you have to pay a $1 deposit for the router through your credit card.

we walked to the right and then xuan wanted to eat donuts, so we walked back to the left, got the donuts (one each) and an iced chocolate. then we walked toward the departure gate, which wasn’t really far away from the middle. we walked and ate, and we saw a series of t-shirts which xuan proceeded to condemn most of them for lack of artistic flair. we went through the security...

music

i know very little about music, so i just wanted to write some rudimentary thoughts about my favourite types of music.

there is no music that fits all events, moods and situations.

i enjoy music from many different genres. i’ve listened to mandopop for most of my life. recently i have taken a liking to jazz. i love jazz. it gives me a soothing, calming sensation. i love bossa nova. sometimes i feel like listening to vocal jazz, and sometimes i don’t. sometimes i prefer instrumental.

in the morning i like to listen to ‘chill’ music. i love the feeling of waking up to indie music with a tinge of hip-hop.

in the evening, i like to put on a little electronic and house music with a bit of r&b. it keeps me going through the night, despite my fatigue.

dominos

written october 2, 2014

(this is NOT supposed to be artsy-fartsy)

he walked up to me with a big smile.

“我可以借你一分鐘的時間嗎?”

i walked past him, then turned around.

“你有聽過dominos嗎?”

he held up a dominos brochure, printed on an a4 paper.

i took a quick glance.

“有啊。這個我看過,它有寄來我的家。”

he quickly responded.

“哦,這個是不一樣的。”

“我想問一下,你有十八歲嗎?”

“沒有。明天。”

“哦。” he reached out his hand.

“happy birthday.”

“thank you!”

i walked away.

365 days (west wing)

originally written july 2014

watching this episode, and seeing John Spencer play Leo McGarry, who’s just returned to the white house after recuperating from his heart attack, gave me a bittersweet feeling. the staff arranged a gathering at his new office (C.J.‘s old office) but they all had to leave one by one. the meetings later on in the day were awkward. it had a weird feeling to it.

it’s funny. the show has evolved to a point where the old cast have been disappearing one by one. i know it happens on every show. but there’s one of those episodes when you suddenly pause and realise that it’s happened. sam was gone a long time ago. nancy mcnally doesn’t appear as much. fitzwallace is dead. the show is moving toward a newer platform where it introduces the new presidential candidates, which i assume will take the frontstage in season 7. maybe the entire main cast will be cut to josh...

clutter

written september 30, 2014

i really don’t like clutter. indeed, since young i’d begun to throw things away because i felt that the entire room was too packed with objects, things.

but we have to be careful - there are two kinds of things. there are regular objects, and then there are those sentimental objects which give us hope and radiate positivity. christmas and birthday cards, letters, postcards, should all be kept. when i was young i did not think this way. i threw out lots and lots of childhood memorabilia - something which my parents and grandparents advised against, but i did it anyway. and now i regret that.

but still i envision a day when my room is rid of all school-related things, things which take up more than sixty percent of articles in my room. sometimes it just feels annoying to have all these papers lying around especially when we live in this age of modern...

littering

written august 2014

i thought it would be good to write something here.

recently i was sent on a litter-picking activity by the school, with a few other classes. this is not a tirade about how the year 5s chose me as one of their beach cleaning i/cs without fully briefing me about what i should be doing, resulting in screwups and miscommunication

it was a terrible scene. there was rubbish everywhere. my friend frank and i scoured a long stretch of the beach and we filled up an entire trash bag (and before that, we filled up about another half). a memorable part of the cleaning was when we had to pick out bottles, styrofoam boxes and other litter from within a whole bunch of shrubs. these objects were stuck in the shrubs because they were presumably washed up from the high tide. it was very difficult to get them out of the shrubs, despite using both the litter pickers as well as by...

favourite scenes from “my name is fame” (2006)

close friends will know that i have two favourite movies:

  1. Stranger Than Fiction (2006)
  2. My Name Is Fame/我要成名 (2006)

i have a few favourite scenes from 我要成名. Throughout the film, the protagonist Poon, played by Sean Lau, visits a sundries shop, operated by a lady boss and her son. He visits the shop a few times, the first time asking for half a dozen of beer (he leaves out beer, simply saying “half a dozen”). the lady boss asks him if he has been filming any shows lately, and comments that she had been watching his old show, 大时代, and praised it. he replies “perhaps (i will be filming) in my next life”.

the film goes on and the next time he returns to the sundries shop, he says “half a dozen” to the lady boss, and she reaches for a pack of beer, while he corrects her and says, “no, half a dozen of instant noodles” (which he is intending to get for his disciple, Fei). after which, he...
